Nora, The Nature Fairy

Sunday, the start of the week. The sun is rising above the trees to wake up the neighborhood with its golden rays. Nora’s eyes burst wide open. She is ready to play another day! Who will she be? A doctor? A fairy? A teacher? Or maybe even a witch?!

“Good morning!” Nora sings to no person in sight, but to her purple and pink butterflies that stick on her wall, to her stuffed unicorn next her on the bed, and to her dollhouse where everyone is still resting.

With her arms stretching to the sky, Nora gets up from bed wearing her light blue pj bottoms and her yellow pj short sleeve shirt. Nora slips her little feet into her unicorn slippers and runs to wake up mom! Luckily, mom is right down the hall.

“Goooood morning!” she sings as she gets into her mom’s room. Mom is half- asleep due to Nora’s alarm and responds with, “Nora, when did the sun come up?”

“Like a minute ago!” She says all excited. “Oh, my sweet girl. Let Mommy get up.” Mom says as she sits up on her bed.

“Mommy, how long will that take?” Nora asked with her head tilted. “Tell you what,” Mom says with a chuckle. “why don’t you go get dressed up and when I change and grab my tools, we can go outside to tend to the garden. Sounds like a plan?” Mom finishes her proposal. “Sounds like a plan!” Nora exclaims.

While Mom was getting up from bed and finding her gardening gloves, Nora was getting ready herself, picking items from her dress up box. Nora chose her blue fairy wings and a purple tutu; she is ready to go on an adventure!

Mom and Nora head outside for gardening time in the backyard.  The backyard has a nice lawn, stones that lead to the garden, and a nice little wooden area next to it that looked so interesting. The wooden area is where Nora plays fairy sometimes, but only if Mom is nearby.

Nora was playing “Lava” all by herself on the stepping stones leading to Mom’s plant bed and flowers. “Mommy you’re in the lava!” She says giggly.

“Oh, no! How will my plants ever grow now!” She plays along acting all sad.

“Nora, The Nature Fairy! Please help my plants!” She pleads to Nora.

“Let me get through the lava and see what I can do!” Nora fixes her wings and hops the stones to her Mom.

“Let me use some of my magic!” Nora rubs her hands together, twirls once, and then releases the magic from her hands. “There, that should do it!” She says confidently.

“Oh! Nora, The Nature Fairy, thank you so much! I will save some flowers for you!” Mom responds.

“You’re welcome. Just be careful with the lava from now on, okay?” Nora says sternly waving her finger at her Mom.

“Of course,” she replies with a smile. “I will be more careful, I promise.” Mom finishes and laughs a little.

Nora was done playing lava and ran out of ideas on what to play. Something ringed in her head “Nora The Nature Fairy.” She really liked hearing that.

“Mom! Can I go into the little woods next to the garden? I promise not to go too far.” She begs.

“Yes, you can’t go past the fence though, okay? That’s where our backyard stops.” Mom replies with a worried look. “Okay, Mommy!” She runs into the wooded area.

As Nora went off into the wooded area, she started to look on the ground for things to collect. First, she finds a grey and dark purple spotted rock that was tucked into the dirt. “Ooooh, this one’s pretty!” Then, she spots a big tree, bigger than all the others. Not by how tall, but by how full of flowers it was. Nora saw a couple of the white flowers fall from the tree and she looked up in awe of the sun and the petals floating around her. “Maybe I should take one of these as well! Maybe, I could make a potion with these to become a REAL Nature Fairy!” She says to herself and does a little excited dance.

“Don’t take too much, now.” A mysterious voice was heard in the background.

“Who said that?” Nora turns her head and doesn’t see anyone.

“Me.” As soon as Nora turned around and looked behind the big tree, she saw a white unicorn and stopped everything she was doing. Nora was in a dream, right? Is this unicorn actually talking to her?

“Are you a unicorn?” she asks with her head tilted to the side.

“I am; my name is Willow.” The unicorn responds.

“My-my name is N- Nora.” Nora responds shakily.

“Oh, there is no need to be afraid. I’m sorry I surprised you, but I wanted to tell you something about these woods.” Willow said.

“Oh, please tell me. I want to become the best Nature Fairy I can be.” Nora responds with a bit more ease.

“Nature Fairy, huh? Well, you have some stuff to prove to us woodland creatures that you have what it takes.” Willow warns.

“Creatures? There are more unicorns?” She asks with excitement.

“Yes, but you aren’t supposed to see us, unless we decide you can or if you are a TRUE Nature Fairy.” Willow clarifies.

This perked Nora right up, “How do I become one?! How do I become one?!” She asks eagerly, while jumping up and down.

“Well, first you need to return the woods belongings, so that rock and flower need to be returned.” Willow explains.

“But…why?” Nora asks with a frown.

“Because if we take everything from a forest, what will WE have left? The animals, creatures, and trees. We want it all too.” Willow explains further.

“Okay, I see, I see. So how do I make potions?” Nora answers with curiosity.

“You don’t need to. In order to be a true Nature Fairy, you must complete the following steps. Step 1: Sit or Stand under the tree and enjoy the sunbeams on your face.” Nora goes to sit underneath the tree and returns the flower she picked up. As she gets comfortable on the earth’s floor, the rays of the sun peek through the branches and shine on her face, warming her skin as she sees the petals falling around her. She has never been this calm.

“Good job! You have the fairy glow already! Step 2: Trees are very important for nature in the world. So, you will have to be a protector of the trees. Can you do that?” Willow asks.

“I can try my best!” Nora pauses and looks disappointed. “ I’m so small though.” Nora points out.

“That’s all we ask though, is that you try your best! You have the mindset of a true Nature Fairy, I just know it. Even telling someone not to harm a tree is super helpful!” Nora looks with eyes around her with wonder as she feels warmth after Willow gives such a compliment. “I promise to do my best, whatever form of help it may be.” Nora swears to Willow.

“Alright, last step. Step 3: Be mischievous, but also be kind and respectful.” Willow states the last step.

“I am kind. What does mischievous mean?” Nora wonders.

“Mischievous is when a magical child your age is playful and lighthearted with the meaning to have fun, or annoy someone. I am sensing you do both.” Willow clarifies. “Hey!” Nora said with an upset look. “All fairies are mischievous. It’s not meant to be mean. As long as you have that mischief, but are still kind in your heart and are respectful to others, you have completed step 3.” Willow finished. “Now, Nora, can you tell me why you want to be a nature fairy?”  Willow asks with looming curiosity.

Nora felt some pressure and then turned around to see her Mom still working in the garden and how excited she felt to help the flowers grow. Now that she knows what it means to be an actual nature fairy, she can make a full promise.

Nora stands tall and puts her hands on her hips, “I want to be a nature fairy because I want to enjoy the trees, the bushes, and the rocks. It’s all so beautiful how each item in the woods is unique and different. I want to protect them all, so they won’t be harmed. The creatures and the trees. I want to protect them in the most magical and respectful way I can.” She looks at Willow for approval.

Willow nods, “I have had the most enjoyable time getting to know you, Nora, The Nature Fairy.” Nora’s eyes beam and she starts jumping up and down. “Does this mean I will be able to see you again, and maybe meet other woodland creatures?” Nora asks.

“As long as you want to, yes.” Willow clarifies further.

Nora heard Mom call her name. It was time for their Sunday trip to the market. So, Nora, The Nature Fairy said farewell to Willow for now and headed back to her Mom.

In the car

Mom and Nora were on their way to the market. In the back seat, Nora saw out the window of the car a forest with a big and yellow crane.

“Mom, what are they doing to those woods?” Nora asks. Mom looked quickly to where Nora pointed. “They are cutting down some trees, honey. They are building a new business there.” Mom explains.

“But, Mommy? Where will all the creatures and trees go?” Nora asked.

“Well, the creatures will have to find a new home and the trees are being cut down.” Mom said.

“Well, that’s not fair to the forest and the creatures!” Nora yells.

“Oh, yeah. Who says?” Mom asks.

“Nora, The Nature Fairy says so!” Nora said with so much pride!

“You tell ‘em kiddo!” Mom praises.
